With popular K-Pop groups like BTS performing on SNL and Blackpink performing on Good Morning America, people are becoming aware of this global phenomenon known as K-Pop, or Korean Pop music, hailing from Seoul, South Korea. It is a multi-billion dollar industry and Americans are becoming among its biggest consumers.
K-Dramas are now noticeably prevalent with streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Forbes reported American viewers watching an average of 40 hours a month on one platflorm. https://www.forbes.com/sites/laurenorsini/2018/01/08/korean-media-hits-the-big-time-in-north-america/#7e87b8f86be2
DJ Jon (of Hot 104.7) started a Facebook page called K Pop Maine as an experiment in March, 2019 under the helpful consultation of Leocardia Sheehy, a local K-Pop fan since 2009. The interest was immediate with K-Pop fans in the area and continues to grow. With only a short time frame to organize a dance night at Empire Live Music And Events, expectations were exceeded with a decent turnout of close to 100 people on Saturday April 13th. Guests were already very familiar with the music and various dances associated with the songs played. Feedback was positive with people wanting K-Pop dance nights more often.
Why all the interest? According to DJ Jon, “I think it’s because 90s boy/girl acts don’t exist anymore and there’s a void in the market. In addition, there’s a growing hunger for more global music with #1 songs like “Despacito,” “Mi Gente” and Cardi B’s “I Like It” featuring Latin pop stars Bad Bunny & J. Balvin. These songs are almost completely in Spanish and it doesn’t seem to matter.” Groups like BTS and Blackpink have both broken records for Youtube views, Twitter and Instagram followers. Much of that support comes from the US. Blackpink signed with Interscope in October, 2018 and another popular K-Pop group TXT signed with Universal Republic last month.
Portland House of Music and Entertainment will be the place to go for K-Pop Dance Nights every other Tuesday starting on July 9th of this year. K Pop Maine will host these events and plans to provide trivia contests and a fun, positive dance party for local K-Pop lovers and those that just want something different.
