An all-star band of Maine musicians will be paying tribute to one of the great voices in rock by playing one his finest albums, “Mad Dogs & Englishmen”, in its entirety… and then some. Gina Alibrio, Susanne Gerry, Justin Maxwell, Matt Kennedy, Timothy Goad, and Alex Cardamone will join with members of Tumbledown Saints to recreate the collaboration between Joe Cocker and Leon Russell.
The story of Mad Dogs & Englishmen is nearly as epic as the sound laid down on wax some 47 years ago. After months on the road, Joe Cocker arrived in Los Angeles in March 1970 and was immediately told he’d been scheduled to perform a seven week tour to start some 8 days later. The next day, Leon Russell hears of Joe’s plight and offers his services in forming and playing in a band for the tour. So great is his prowess on the telephone that, by the day’s end, ten musicians have been assembled and rehearsals begun. After six days of marathon rehearsals, the band crowds into a plane along with roadies, sound men, secretaries, managers, wives, lovers, assorted children, and a film crew bound for Detroit. On March 26 and 27, the group arrives at the Fillmore East where the shows are recorded and released as a double album.
Songs from this show represent the entire track listing from the original double LP as well as songs that were performed during the same shows but were unavailable until recently.
